Schools: Difficult and Challenging Conversations with Parents.
Increasingly during supervision sessions with Head Teachers / Designated Safeguarding Leads, I am being asked about strategies on how to work with parents that are challenging.
So how does an experienced HT/DSL have that difficult conversation let alone an inexperienced young teacher.
I always ask the question. What training have you had? What training have you provided for your staff? The answer is always none. The fact is that schools appear to be totally unprepared to face these issues with some teachers avoiding what can be a confrontational situation.
Create Safer Organisations have now developed courses to train teachers and give them strategies to use during those meetings to achieve a successful outcome for both parties.
This will include a session on how to plan and construct that meeting, targeting the desired outcome which always should be for the benefit of the child and avoiding that hard challenge.
Our courses will equip teachers with the required skills; in addition, we have developed a Train the Trainers course to enable DSL’s to deliver this.
